A special contribution by John Matthew for the Christmas season.

As I reflect on the last year, I am struck by the stark contrast between the circumstances we have endured and the constancy of our great God. We’ve lived a year of frequent change, stress, uncertainty, and in many cases, heartache, frustration, confusion, division… and on and on. It’s been a challenge, to say the least! And yet, when I look at the faithfulness of God, and his consistency in the middle of turmoil and upheaval, I’m amazed, and I’m thankful, and I’m blessed. Just take a look at the truth of who He is. I trust that you will be encouraged and strengthened as you take in His word and allow the Spirit of God to speak to your heart:
    “For I, the Lord, do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed” (Malachi 3:6). In the midst of all things God’s grace and love cover us and hold us fast. He doesn’t change! He is present, and merciful, and kind. We are His people, and He is our God… and no circumstance can ever change that truth.
    “If we are faithless, he remains faithful – for he cannot deny himself” (2 Timothy 3:13). Even in those moments of doubt and uncertainty, when we aren’t sure how to hold on to Him, He holds on to us. He is faithful. He upholds the covenant. He loves and cares, and He walks with us through the tumult. He has said He will never leave us or forsake us. It’s the truth – even when we aren’t leaning into Him, He’s got us surrounded.
    “The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of his heart to all generations” (Psalm 33:11). You may have heard that God has plans for you, for your life. They’re plans for your good and for His glory! That doesn’t preclude hardship, pain, suffering, uncertainty. But it does offer us hope. And it gives us an anchor to hold us fast, a rock to stand on in the storm. And His love reaches beyond us to our children, and our grand children, and the generations that will follow. His love cannot be overcome, and His plans cannot be undone. He is for us!
    In fact… “Your faithfulness endures to all generations; you have established the earth, and it stands fast” (Psalm 119:90). Sometimes I wonder about the world my children will inherit, and the persecution and hardship they might face. It could be overwhelming if it weren’t for the truth that God is with them – even now – and that His faithfulness extends to them, and that goodness and mercy follow them all the days of their lives too. And so we hold on to hope.
And more. The Word is teeming with truth that God is the refuge for His people, that He is consistent and faithful, that His love endures forever, that He never changes. Like this one: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). This is the God we serve. This is the Saviour we trust. This is the King who conquered sin and death, and who reigns victorious, and leads His people in triumphal procession. You can trust Him. In the middle of whatever circumstance you find yourself, in the midst of every hardship and pain, He is present and He is faithful – a gentle Father and Friend. He never changes! And He is for His people… always. And so, “to the King of ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honour and glory forever and ever. Amen” (1 Timothy 1:17).
